John Crabtree
1846-1903
John Crabtree and his wife Martha Lumb were innkeepers
at the Shoulder of Mutton, Hey Lane in Scammonden, Yorkshire. John was also in the woollen
manufacturing business, and along with colleagues built a mill at the
rear of the inn. It was named Thollin Wood Mill, and is pictured below.
Sadly a dispute over water rights brought about the end of the mill
and it presently lies in ruins. The Shoulder of Mutton still stands,
though now as private houses. The ony trace of its previous history are
the initials J&MC on the wall.
